RSHE

What are PSHE and RSHE?

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education is a broader, mostly non-statutory subject that covers life skills, careers, and financial well-being. RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) is the statutory, safeguarding-focused subset of PSHE. While RSHE is legally compulsory, PSHE encompasses everything else including economic awareness and broader personal development.

The Department for Education has updated the compulsory Relationship and Health Education curriculum for primary school children, effective September 2026. The purpose of these subjects is to support all young people in being happy, healthy, and safe, equipping them for adult life and helping them make a positive contribution to society.

As part of this process, all schools are required to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their relationship education policies. This collaborative approach ensures parents have a voice in deciding when and how certain content is covered. Below is a link to a parent survey provided to collect parent views on this area of the curriculum.
